However, I don't have physical records to determine which is correct. I show his DOB as 7 Jan 1858 (Germany) and death as 12 Mar 1931. Resided in Tripoli IA, buried at St Peter's Evangelical (Faith Cemetery - possibly abandoned).

Be sure to get maps as you will find Tripoli and Fredricka in Bremer County. The Mahlstedts resided in Chickasaw I think New Hampton until abt 1920. Modern roads have names instead of numbers. It is quite confusing. Topographic maps will help and can be downloaded from the MSN Terramap server via USGS.
Be sure to check the wonderful Genweb sites for both Bremer and Chickasaw County. Many listers are missing the wonderful online resources at these and similar sites. Also the local Genealogy Societies at both counties do inexpensive research.
The Waverly Public Library and the New Hampton Public Library are definitely worth checking as are the courthouses! More info? Write back.
Good luck,
