Erastus Alexander Gardner was born in Elk County, Penn., Jan. 27, 1834, and died in New Hampton, Iowa, Dec. 20, 1906. When twelve years of age he removed to Wisconsin with his father's family. He enlisted in the Civil War in August 1862 and served until the close of the war and was honorably discharged. He was 2nd Lieutenant in his company F, 33d. Wisconsin.

He was married to Janet Thompson at Evansville, Wisconsin, Feb. 18, 1866. In the fall of the same year they moved to Fayette county, Iowa, where they lived till 1901, when the family came to New Hampton. he is survived by his wife and two sons, John R., of New York and Dr. Paul E. of New Hampton.

The funeral services were held Sunday at the Congregational church of which Mr. Gardner was a member and one of its deacons. The funeral sermon was preached by Rev. Robinson, of the M. E. church and an old friend. Deceased was also a member of A. P. Morton post New Hampton and of Arcana Lodge A. F. and A. M., New Hampton, and it can be truthfully said of him he lived up to his obligations in them all. The G.A.R., Relief Corps and Masonic Fraternity were present at the funeral in a body as escorts.--New Hampton, Iowa, Gazette.

Mr. Gardner was a brother in law of Mrs. J. H. West of this city and will be remembered by many of our older citizens. In the early days of our city he was proprietor of a meat market. Mrs. West also mourns the death of a sister, Mrs. Myron Corey, which occurred at Wesley, Iowa, about two months ago.

January 18, 1907, Enterprise, Evansville, Wisconsin
