Surnames: DULL

I have been trying for years to get more information on my great great
grandfather, Simon Barjonas Dull. One time, while in Monona visiting
relatives, I went to the Monona City Museum, which, I believe was still being
run by Willa Helwig. There on the wall in the room to your immediate left,
upon entering the house, was a picture of the volunteers from Monona, and
there in that picture was my great great grandpa!
Some family members have said that he was born in Iowa, while there have been
others that have said he was born in Virginia. I live in Virginia, and could
search archive records here..but before I go through the expense of doing
that...would like to know if there are other places I could check first.
