EDS. JOURNAL --On the 26th day of July at l0:45 p.m. died in Richland
Township, Decatur County, Iowa, an extraordinarily gifted, but an
unfortunate young man, BELA MADARASZ, at the age of 23 years and 7
months, son of L. MADARASZ, born apparently with sound but weak eyes.
When six years old he commenced his schooling in Union School House, and
continued his studies for seven years. His eyes, however, became weaker
and weaker, and in his l3th year he lost his eyesight entirely. No
medical help could restore it to him.
Four years ago, his father took him to the Asylum for the Blind at
Vinton, where he was developing from year to year an extraordinary
talent for his studies, that he was considered one of the very best
students in the whole Institute.
Last fall, in August, he returned to the Institute. About January his
health commenced failing. It grew worse and worse. In March he was
taken home. His dear parents and loving sisters did all that was
possible to save him. He expired quietly, entirely resigned to his
fate, regretting only that he could not finish his course in the
Institute which would have taken three more years, and then, as in his
dreams, he would have been able to help his aged father, mother and
sisters. He is undoubtedly happier now; his sufferings ceased. May his
ashes rest in peace.
