ATTEMPTED MURDER
-------
Timothy Moore Uses an Axe on His Wife Because She Threatened to
Leave Him.
-------
TIMOTHY MOORE, who lives in the part of town known as "Grassy Hollow",
became enraged at his wife because she threatened to leave him and
knocked her down with a club and then inflicted some very painful and
dangerous wounds about the head with an axe.
About 7 o'clock Tuesday evening, WM. GIBSON came up town in search of an
officer and reported that a woman living in the south part of town had
been murdered. Deputy Sheriff SANGER, accompanied by a number of
citizens, at once hastened to the scene. Reaching the house occupied by
MOORE they found the doors locked and the house in darkness. After
knocking at the door a few seconds, MOORE unlocked the door and let them
in. Upon lighting the lamp they were horror-stricken to find the
ghastly form of a woman lying on the floor unconscious, with the blood
oozing from the frightful wounds she had received, until the floor was
completely covered by blood. By this time, CORONER BROWN arrived and
asked MOORE to account for his wife's condition. He replied by saying
that two tramps had called for dinner and while his wife was getting it,
he had gone up town to get her a new dress, and upon returning, found
her lying on the floor unconscious and he supposed that the tramps had
made the assault during his absence. The Sheriff, not taking much stock
in what he had to say, arrested him and lodged him in jail. MOORE's
little finger on his left hand was almost cut off, which was probably
done while using the axe.
MRS. MOORE made a statement yesterday morning, in which she says that it
was her husband who inflicted the wounds on her person. That he first
struck her with a club and then used the axe. The wounds have been
dressed and she will be taken to the infirmary, where she will receive
the best of care and attention. MOORE is seventy-two years of age and
his wife is about twenty-five.

MRS. TIMOTHY MOORE, referred to last week, has been moved to the
infirmary and occupies room 4. She is improving as fast as could be
expected and the infirmary physicians say her chances for recovery are
good. There is, however, some danger of blood poison setting in, which
would prove fatal. The wounds in the head number fourteen, being merely
scalp wounds, about half of these having healed. The photographer,
acting under the instruction of the county attorney, took a photograph
of the sick woman Monday. Last Sunday she signed the following as her
dying declaration:
STATE OF IOWA} SS.
DECATUR COUNTY
I, SUSAN MOORE, on oath say, that I am the wife of TIMOTHY MOORE; that
on January l9, l892, TIMOTHY MOORE struck me. I do not know just what
he struck me with. I had told him that I was going to leave him. He
said I should not go. I was lying down when he hit me. The effects of
the blow were such as to knock me insensible. When I came to I found
the injuries on me that now show. I know that I am badly injured and
will probably live but a short time and make this my dying declaration;
having been informed that I would not last long, and believing this to
be true.
Her
SUSAN X MOORE.

Note: TIMOTHY MOORE's 2 small children were mentioned in the article
about the death of D.S. MILLIRONS; they were suffering from hunger
and the baby's feet were badly frozen.
