Decatur County Journal
March 30, l893
We quote from a Metamora, Illinois paper containing a notice of the
death of MRS. M.O. HAZEN, a beloved sister of our neighbor, MR. SAMUEL
SEARLE. All the kind words said of her are endorsed by those who made
her acquaintance while she and another sister, MRS. PRESCOTT, of Boston,
Mass., were visiting their brother and his family here a number of years
ago.
"MARTHA SEARLE was born at Skowhegan, Maine, November, l8l9, and
departed this life March 8, l893. She was married to her sorrowing
husband at Lawrence, Mass., in l85l and in l856 they took up their abode
in Illinois. MRS. HAZEN was of the sturdy, industrious New England
people and was indeed a typical American lady and reflected honor upon
the lineage from which she came. She had a warm place in the affections
of the people, being respected and loved by all.
Deceased had been a member of the Presbyterian Church for a great many
years and will be missed in church circles as well as in the broken home
where she was a true and noble companion, a kind and loving mother, to
the husband and son, a young man, who mourn their great loss.
A very large congregation assembled at the funeral. The Ladies Aid
Society, in a body, waited with open file at the church entrance till
the casket and members passed, then closed in double file and marched to
seats reserved for them, thus paying a high tribute of respect to the
departed sister."
