Decatur County Journal
June 23, l898

A deep gloom was cast over the city last Thursday when a telegram came
announcing the death of MRS. GEORGE HURST, which occurred in Chicago on
that day. She had gone to that city some two weeks prior to ther death
for the purpose of taking medical treatment. She was a much loved
woman. Always cheerful and ready to lend a helping hand in time of
trouble, she had endeared herself to a large circle of friends.

ELIZABETH LAYTON was a daughter of J.M. LAYTON and sister of DR. H.R.
LAYTON. She was born in the city of Ft. Madison on May l6, l864, and
was at the time of her death, 34 years and l month old. She came with
her parents to Leon in the summer of l875 and this was her final
home--here she grew to womanhood. May 20, l886, she was led to the
altar by GEORGE E. HURST and to them were born four children, all of
whom survive her.

In the matter of religious faith, her natural tendencies were towards
the Episcopalian Church, but there being no organization of that
denomination here, she became identified with the Methodist Church.

The remains were brought from Chicago on Friday by the bereaved husband
who was by her side at the time of her decease. The funeral was held
from the home on Saturday afternoon at l o'clock, conducted by REV.
ALLEN JUDD of Des Moines.

The floral offerings, the large funeral cortege and the fact that a
number of business houses were closed during the time of the funeral,
attest the immense popularity of this beloved one and the great sorrow
felt at her demise. The sorrowing husband and motherless children are
assured of the sympathy of many friends.
