Decatur County Journal
August l8, l898
MRS. JANE LOCKWOOD, widow of R.G. LOCKWOOD, died at the residence of her
son-in-law and daughter, MR. and MRS. LEWIS RICHARDSON, on August l4,
l898, and was interred in the Leon Cemetery the following day by the
side of her husband who died about seven years ago.
MRS. LOCKWOOD, whose maiden name was PERRY, was born in Vermont, March
29, l839, and was married when she was 25 years of age. She was the
mother of three children, two of whom died in their infancy, and the
third one is the wife of LEWIS RICHARDSON.
With MR. and MRS. RICHARDSON, MRS. LOCKWOOD made her home since the
death of her husband. They were both hard workers in the Sunday School,
teaching and superintending for many years.
MRS. LOCKWOOD was a great lover of music and was a good singer. When
but eleven years old, she united with the choir in Vermont, where she
attended with her parents, and the day before she died, she sang that
beautiful hymn, 'Nearer My God To Thee'. It was her request that MISS
BELLE THOMPSON should play and lead the singing and the writer of these
few lines should conduct the funeral service at the residence, all of
which was completely attended to, after which a number of her neighbors
followed her to her last resting place and there deposited her remains
to await the resurrection of the just at the last day. She was, during
her life, a member of the Baptist Church.
THOMAS WALLER.
