MARY J. SEARS, daughter of DANIEL and ELIZABETH SEARS, was born in
Macoupin County, Illinois, March 3, l830, and departed this life
September l6, l9l4, at the home of WALTER SNYDER, near Leon, Ia., being
at the time of her death, 84 years, 6 months and l3 days of
age.

She, with her parents, came to Iowa in l84l and settled on a farm near
Fairfield, Jefferson County, where she grew to womanhood. She was united
in marriage to STEPHEN HARPER May l6, l86l, and this union was blessed
with three children, all of whom preceded her to the spirit world. Her
companion also dying in l866. She then made her home with her brother,
J.J. SEARS, until her marriage to JOHN CARTER, December 6, l870. They
settled on a farm near Franklin, where they lived for several years,
then moved to Leon, and later to Davis City, where they remained until
his death, September l0, l90l. She again made her home with her brother
until the death of his wife and since that time with her niece, MRS.
SUSIE COONTZ.
She leaves one brother, SAMUEL SEARS, and a host of relatives and
friends.

She united with the Church of the Brethren about l875 in which faith she
died.
