RACHEL ISADORA BROWN, daughter of A.J. and M.M. JEFFRIES was born on her
father's farm, Clay Township, Harrison County, Mo., on Nov. 26th, l860, where
she grew up to womanhood. On Feb. 26, l885 she was married to LEROY A.
BROWN. Together they resided on a farm near Akron, Mo., for nearly 5 years.
In l889 they moved to Davis City, Ia., MR. BROWN having become one of the
firm of Teale-Jeffries & Brown, successor to Scott & Kramer in groceries,
hardware and undertaking business, and MR. and MRS. BROWN have continued to
reside in Davis City since their removal here until the day of her death.
MRS. BROWN was of a lively, jovial, yet gentle disposition, and as a young
lady no party or gathering of young people in the neighborhood where she was
raised was complete until "DORA" as she was familiarly called, was present,
she being among the first in all the innocent amusements among the circle of
friends. The writer hereof has been acquainted with her and the family and
the friends among whom she grew to womanhood since her early youth, and of
eight or ten of her intimate school mates and young lady friends, DORA is the
fourth or fifth who has passed out from this life and joined the silent
majority in "The Grand Beyond." After her marriage she laid aside her
girlish ways and at once became the true housewife and helpmate. Upon the
organization of the Presbyterian Socity in their town, she united with them
and accepted Jesus as her Savior and ever after lived a consistent life. She
was a prominent member of the Rebekah Degree of the I.O.O.F. having filled
many imp!
ortant stations therein, being at the time of her death a Past Noble Grand
and a prominent member of their famous "degree team." Her last sickness of
about three weeks' duration was attended with much pain and suffering, all of
which was borne without complaint. On the morning of Jan. l5th, about 4 a.m.
her face became illuminated with brightness as from a Holy light from on
High, which shone with radiance and was plainly visible to all present, when
she plainly fell asleep to awake only at the resurrection morn. Aged 37
years, l month and l9 days.
The funeral sermon was preached at the Union Church by her Pastor, Rev.
McKay, to a densely crowded house, at l0 a.m. Sunday, Jan. l5, and the
interment was by the R.D. and Sub-Ordinate Lodge I.O.O.F. at Akron, Mo.,
where they laid her remains by the side of her mother and other friends who
have preceded her to that "silent bourne from whence no traveler e'er
returns."
She leaves a husband, one daughter, a father, two brothers and four sisters,
besides a host of friends to mourn her departure.
Let us emulate her good deeds and example by living holy lives that we may at
last meet on "The Sun bright shore of Eternal Deliverance" where parting will
be no more.
