I am not related to this family, but I have a good story to tell.

I am currently on vacation in at Lake Okoboji in Wahpeton, Dickinson County, IA. My cousins and a friend were having dinner at the Miller's Bay restaurant, and the owner, who is currently renovating parts of the restaurant came over to talk to us and told us that when parts of the old building were being redone, he found a piece of wood with the name Orpha BETHEL and the year 1919.

So I got online and decided to see what I could find. Then today I went up to Spirit Lake and the Dickinson County court house and looked up details on the marriage record for Orpha BETHEL to LeRoy ARTHUR.

They were married on 1 SEP 1920 by a Methodist Minister (J. R. Tumbleson) in Spirit Lake, IA. LeRoy Homer ARTHUR was born in Spirit Lake, IA. He was 34 when they were married. His parents were A.E. ARTHUR and Mary JEMERSON. Orpha Mildred BETHEL was 18 and born in Cherokee, IA. The BETHEL family was living in Milford, IA in 1920. Obed and Cora (GITCHEL) BETHEL were the witnesses. LeRoy's profession is listed as an Auto Mechanic.

The marriage data is recorded in Book 4, Page 962. In order to get a copy, you have to pay $5.00 and be a relative. So if you want a copy of the Dickinson County Vital Record, I do have the form and can send it to you if you want it. I can just scan it and email it to you to print out.

Finally, I've transcribes the surnames as they were written in the record. It's possible they are misspelled and written as they were "heard" by the county recorder at the time.

Hope this has been helpful and interesting to you.

Sue Clavin
