A bio sent to me from the Terril Public Library and obtained at the Spencer, Iowa library by Rebekah Schnelle of the Terril Public Library on October 26 2002:
THE OSCAR WITTCHEN FAMILY
Oscar Wittchen came to the United States from Guden(Guben), Germany in 1889 at the age of 13 years. He lived with an uncle in Streator, Illinois, later moving to Sac City. He married Anna Oldenburg who also had come from Germany. They lived at Scranton, Iowa, before moving to Terril in 1912 where they farmed until retiring in Terril in 1938.
Oscar died in 1962(1961) a the age of 86 years. Anna died in 1965.
The were the parents of five children: Frank, Roy, Alta, Oral and Gladys. All are now deceased except Roy who still lives on the family farm which his father purchased in 1912.
Roy was born May 20, 1905 neaer Scranton. He started school in a country school near there, but came with his family to Terril in 1912, where he attended school from then until he graduated in 1924. He married Ava Bakley from Pierson, Iowa, June 8, 1933. Ava taught in several schools, many years in Terril with a total of 30 years teaching. She died July 2, 1986.
Gladys was born October 10, 1910, and also graduated from the Terril School. She married Roy J. Cook in April 1933. They farmed in Terril until 1952 when they moved to a farm southeast of Sprit Lake. Gladys died August 4, 1991. Roy died a few years before.

From the Daily Reporter, Spencer Iowa: November 7, 1961 under Deaths: Funeral for Oscar Wittchen is Wednesday: Terril--Funeral services for Oscar Wittchen, 86, Terril, have been set for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Methodist Church here with Rev. Herman Smith officiating.
Burial will be in Fairview cemetry at Terril with the Leyson funeral home in charge.
Mr. Wittchen died Monday at the Dickinson County Memorial hospital where he had been a patient 10 days.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Wittchen; two daughters, Mrs. Roy Cook of Spirit Lake and Mrs. E. R. Prentice of Spencer; and a son, Roy Wittchen of Terril.
He was a retired farmer and a longtime resident of Dickinson County
