I've "rescued" an old photograph of Elle & Alice SMITH which was taken at
the A. P. White Studio in West Union, Iowa. The photograph appears to have
been taken in the 1870's with the girls likely in their teens at the time it
was taken. In addition to their names someone has also noted that they are
the daughters of Whitman & Phoebe. Based on limited research I was able to
find the family of Whitman SMITH living in Eden, IA during the 1860 census,
with records providing the following:
Whitman SMITH, age 56, a Farmer, born NY
Pheobe SMITH, age 36, born NY
Eugene SMITH, age 15, a Farmer, born NY
Eli SMITH, age 13, born NY
Alice SMITH, age 10, born NY
Ellen SMITH, age 8, born NY
Emma SMITH, age 5, born IA
LaFayette SMITH, age 3, born IA
Leonard SMITH, age 2 months, born IA
In 1870 the family is still living in Eden, IA with records indicating the
following:
Whitman SMITH, age 57, a Farmer, born NY
P. A. SMITH, age 46, Keeping House, born NY
Ella SMITH, age 18, at Home, born NY
Emma SMITH, age 14, at Home, born IA
Layfaett SMITH, age 12, at Home, born IA
Leonard SMITH, age 10, at Home, born IA
H. E. SMITH, age 5, born IA
In 1880 the family is still recorded living in Eden, IA with records
providing the following information:
Whitman SMITH, age 76, born NY, a Farmer, parents born CT/NY
Pheobe Ann SMITH, wife, age 55, born NY, parents born NY
Layfayette SMITH, son, age 22, born IA, Works on Farm
Henry Darr SMITH, son, age 15, born IA, Works on Farm
In 1900 the family of Lafayette SMITH is found living in Eden, IA with
records providing the following information:
Lafayette SMITH, age 42, born Jan 1858, a widower, born IA, parents born NY,
a Farmer
Nora E. SMITH, dau, age 12, born Dec 1887, born IA, parents born IA/OH, at
School
Eugene SMITH, brother, age 55, born May 1845, born NY, parents born NY, a
Cook
I'm hoping to locate someone from this SMITH Family so that this precious
old photograph can be returned to its rightful place with family. If you
are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact
me.
Thanks,
Shelley
