"Wonder if you can tell me anything about the Burlington route? My grandfather
came in a car from Omaha.."--Dave Chandler, 23 Feb. 2001.
FREMONT COUNTY SUN. 7/23/1907.--"Q" Adopts Two-cent Fare.--Assistant General
Passenger Agent Buckingham of the Burlington railroad has announced that
within ten days the Burlington would put in operation a two cent fare schedule
between all points on the road regardless of whether or not the different
states have passed a two-cent fare-bill. The Burlington traverses Montana,
Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota
and South Dakota..."
I'm not updated as to how the railroads supplanted covered wagons as a
means of emigration, but I do know that many from Fremont county were in
the habit of loading a "car" when ready to move. In the 1930's I can remember
calling this railroad system the C.B.& Q., an acronym for Chicago, Burlington
and Quincy. But, I'm quite sure "Q", "Burlington" and "C.B. & Q" all referred
to the same thing.
