In l925, "Leb" Gardner is enumerated in Book 110 of the Iowa Census for Washington township, Fremont county, Iowa. He is shown as the son of George and Sarah (sic) Mortimore, and is 69 years old. Mary J., aged 47, daughter of Joseph Griffith, is shown as his wife. Their children are Lloyd E., 19; Arthur M., 17; Hugh O., 15; Fannie A., 10; Mattie E., 6.
"Labius", aged 2 years, is shown in the 1860 census for Forrest City township, Howard county, Iowa living with his parents, George Gardner and wife Charity.
In 1870, George and Charity Gardner are living in Madison township, Fremont county, Iowa. "Libius", 12 years old, is living with them.
"Herbert" Gardner, 22, and Hannah Gardner, 24, and their children, Charlie, aged 2 years, and Mary, 2 months old, are living with George and Charity Gardner in the 1880 Census for Madison township, Fremont county, Iowa.
In the 1885 census by the State of Iowa for Madison township, Fremont county, "Lebius", 26, and Hannah, 30, are found living in the southeast quarter of the southeast quarter of section 16 township 67 range 41. Their children are shown as Charles, aged 9 years, born in Fremont county; Mary, aged 6 years, born in Fremont county; Emma, 4 years old, born in Nebraska; and John, aged 2, place of birth is not shown.
By the time of the 1895 Iowa census for Fremont county, "Lebeus" Gardner, 36, a wood chopper who had been born in Howard county, Iowa, was living in Washington township, with his wife Mary J., aged 17 years, who had been born in Nebraska. Living with them are Mary, 15, born in Fremont county; Emma, 13, born in Fremont county, John W., 11, born in Nebraska; Martha, 10, born in Fremont county; and George M., born in Fremont county and whose age is 7.
The 1900 Federal Census for Washington township, Fremont county, shows "Lebius" Gardner, born in May 1857; his wife Mary, born in November 1877 in Nebraska; Emma, born Oct 1881 in Iowa; Martha, born Nov. 1884 in Iowa; Martin, born August 1887 in Iowa; Elwsworth, born July 1895 in Iowa; Henry, born April 1898 in Iowa; Violana (?), born April 1900 in Iowa. Mary said she had been married for 7 years, was the mother of 6 children, all of whom were living.
The Iowa census of 1905 for Washington township, Fremont county, gives only "Leb", Mary, George, Ellsworth, Henry and Bessie Gardner. There is no other information.
The 1910 Federal Census of Washington township shows "Lebius" Gardner, 53, who has been married to his second wife for 17 years. His wife Mary is 32; has been married but once and is the mother of 8 children, of whom 2 are deceased. She was born in Nebraska, but does not know where her parents were born. George M. Gardner, 21, is living with them, as are Elsworth, 13; Henry, 12; Bessie, 6; Floyd, 4; Arthur, 2; and Hue Orval who is 5 months old.
In the alphabetized 1915 Iowa State Census for Washington township, the family of "Laban" Gardner, 58, is shown by numbers 687 through 696. His wife Mary J. is 37 years old, was born in Nebraska, but has lived in Iowa for 30 years. Card number 689 is missing (or did I fail to notice it?). James H. is 17; Bessie M. is 11; card number 692 is missing; Arthur W. is 7; Hugh O. is 5; Blanche E. is 3; and Fannie A. is one year old.
N.B.: I did not find Lebius Gardner in the 1920 Iowa soundex.....When Elsworth Gardner died in Shenandoah, Iowa on Feb. 19, 1953, his obituary said his mother was Mary Dishong. Book 110, in 1925, shows Mrs. Lawson (Bessie) Monk as saying her mother was Mary Dishong, but, in the same book, James H. Gardner says his mother was Mary Griffith. Since Mary, herself, in 1925 said her father was Joseph Griffith, we have conflicting statements which need resolutions.....All of the older children of Lebius says their mother was Hannah Jennings.--W.F.
