THE SIDNEY ARGUS-HERALD. Feb. 22, 1934. 'TEACHER OF PIONEER DAYS CALLED BEYOND".--Mrs. Lida Atkinson, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. T.. Summers, in Randolph, Tuesday of last week, was one of the early-day rural teachers in this county, her services as such covering the period from 1873 to 1878. Among the many who attended her funeral were some of her pupils who had not forgotten her kindly instructions and personal worth.
Lida McCreary was born at Martinsburg, Iowa, April 17, 1885. At the time of her birth a twin brother and her mother died. Six months later her father passed away. She was thus left an orphan, with no conscious memory of either father or mother.. When 9 years of age she came to Sidney to make her home with Dr. and Mrs. S. M. McCracken, the latter being a sister. After finishing the local school and attending Tabor college, she began teaching, principally at Riverside school northeast of Randolph and Fremont school southeast of that town. Other schools in the county also knew her able services.
She and George G. Atkinson were married in 1878. She became the mother of five children. Charles died in infancy. Those living are Floyd, Ross, Mrs. 'W. T. Summers of Randolph and Fred of Malvern. Mr. Atkinson died February 15, 1904. In 1912 Mrs. Atkinson left the home farm to live in Randolph which has since been her home.
Funeral services were from the Methodist church in Randolph, of which she was long time member, Friday afternoon, conducted by the pastor. Rev. E. O Douglas. The sermon was by Rev. Peter Jacos of Shenandoah, a former pastor at Randolph. Interment was made in the Randolph cemetery.
