Bradley: While I was looking through one of my piles of papers, your e-mail of Jan. 11, 2004 surfaced! I must have mislaid it, and for that I apologize.....You asked about Joanna L. Evans who married Bertrand R. Settell. Since I have a sheet on her father, I will just post it in answer to your query:
ROBERT H. EVANS, born. Dec. 12, 1845 at Greencastle, Putnam county, Indiana - d. Feb. 26, 1919; married (1) Elizabeth J. Davis, born circa 1847 in Ohio. (Her maiden name is shown on the marriage license of her son Elmer Elvira Evans of July 25, 1900 which is posted here on RootsWeb's Fremont site). In 1850, he is shown as part of his father's family (John B. and Elizabeth Evans) in Greencastle township, Putnam county, Indiana. In about 1870, Robert and his older brother William J. emigrated to Marion township, Hamilton county, Iowa where they worked in Joseph Bone's mill. By 1885, Robert and his wife Elizabeth were living in the loess hills on the southeast quarter of the southwest quarter of section 6, township 69, range 42, on the headwaters of Possum Creek, about two miles southeast of Thurman, Iowa.
Elizabeth is shown on the 1895 Fremont county census; Robert was married (2) in Jan. 1896.
He is buried at Tabor, Iowa. I have never found his obituary.
CHILDREN as far as known:
1. Elmer Elvira, b. Feb. 1870 in Hamilton county, Iowa - d. 1938; married Rose E. Briley, daughter of Winfield Scott Briley and Phebe Keys; married on July 25, 1900 at Thurman. Buried at Sidney.
2. Joanna Lola, born about 1874 in Hamilton county, Iowa; married Bertram R. Settell on January 10, 1894 at her home.
ROBERT H. EVANS married (2) Mrs. Roxanna (Watts) Brown, b. Nov. 1858 in Fremont county, Iowa - d. Nov. 12, 1935 in Toppenish, Washington; married on Jan. 22, 1896 at Sidney. She was the daughter of Alonzo and Rhoda (Smith) Watts.
CHILDREN as far as known:
3. Enid Elsie, b. Jan. 21, 1898 at Thurman; he was married on March 1, 1920 in Kern county, California.
NOTES:
1. When George Watts died in March 1934 in Green township, Fremont county, it was said he was the brother of Roxanna (Watts) Evans.
2. E. E. Evans attended the funeral of Mrs. Charles Smith of Thurman.--March 24, 1932.
