SIDNEY ARGUS-HERALD. March 20, 1941. "COUNTY RESIDENT SINCE 1869 DIES AT RIVERTON".--Lizzie Phipps, the daughter of George and Georgianna Phipps, was born August 18, 1868 at Rock Falls, in Whiteside county, Illinois and died March 19, 1941 at the age of 72 years six months and 21 days. She came with her parents to Fremont count in 1869 and the family settled near Riverton in Madison township, where she grew to womanhood. She was the eldest of six children. One brother, Charles, died in 1888, and another brother William in 1927.
She was married to Charles Scoles on Sept. 2, 1886 and to this union one son, Ordie, was born.
Mrs. Scoles was a member of the Madison township church and after moving to Riverton became a member of the Methodist church. She was the teacher of the Loyal Sisters class for many years.
She was a member of the Rebakah lodge of Riverton for 44 years.
She leaves to mourn her passing her husband; son, Ordie; six grandchildren, three great grandchildren; one brother, Fred Phipps of Sioux City; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Davis of Whiting, Iowa, and Mrs. Grace Jackson of Grapevine, Texas, and other relatives and friends.
Funeral rites were conducted at the Scoles home on Tuesday afternoon, March 11, with Rev. H. D. Butts, Methodist pastor, officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Leslie Johnson and Mrs. Ellis Broughton, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Ed. Shearer. Songs were "Lead, Kindly Light," "No Night There," and "Jesus, Savior, Pilot Me." Mrs. Ed. Richie and Charles Moyer were in charge of flowers. Pall bearers were Lyman Sherlock, Floyd Scoles, Ora Scoles, Raymond Beam, Clyde Scoles, and Henry Scoles. Interment was in the Mount Zion cemetery south of Riverton.
Members of the Rebekah lodge of Riverton attended the funeral in a body and were in charge of services at the grave.
