THE SIDNEY ARGUS. March 10, 1927. "West Side Pioneer Dead".--Leonard Ewell was born October 29, 1855 on a farm east of Thurman, and died March 2, 1927 after a brief illness, at McPaul.
Mr. Ewell was the youngest son in the family of eight children of Martin and Elizabeth Ewell, and grew to manhood on the farm on which he was born. March 28, 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Hester Fletcher at Sidney. To this union four children were born, one daughter dying in infancy. Those suriving are Mrs. Estella Whaley and Melvin Ewell of Buhl, Idaho, and Oren Ewell of Thurman; also brothers and sisters as follows: J. M. Ewell, Kansas City; Mrs. Lucinda Gray of Sidney; Mrs. Mary Harris of Councill Bluffs; Mrs. Sarah Jane Leeka of Thurman; David Leeka and Mrs. Emma Dyke, Eagle City, Oklahoma.
Mr. Ewell was at one time county surveyor of this county. From 1901 to 1909 he was numbered as a merchant at Thurman, afterwards moving to Eagle City, Oklahoma, and in 1918 to Buhl, Idaho, where his wife died in February 1926. Last summer Mr. Ewell came back to attend a reunion of his family and decided to remain in Iowa.
His daughter, Mrs. Whaley, and her husband arrived Friday evening from Idaho. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Christian church in Bartlett, conducted by Elder Pierce. The body was taken back to Idaho for burial beside the wife of his youth.
