I'm a transplanted Iowan now living in California, but was raised in Dike
for first 11 years of my life. I still return there for visits and research.
My grand uncle John H. McKinder was a barber in Dike beginning in 1902 and
his half-brother, Charley McKinder (my grandfather) joined him about 1917.
(Charley then worked in Waterloo for 20 years and then returned to Dike
until his retirement in 1970+).
Because of them and others, I've also been researching in Grundy Co. and
found that the County keeps the records up-to about 1925 when they were
moved to the State (Des Moines). So you have a good chance of finding this
information at the Grundy County Courthouse in Grundy Center. Now saying
this, I do know that even though record keeping was supposed to be law by
1880, the recording of births was a bit hit and miss. In another Iowa
county, where grandpa Charley was born, I found only two of the 6 children
registered! No Charley. I haven't written the State, but imagine something
would be filed on them because they would've needed proof established of
birth to draw Soc.Security.
I was dismayed that their is not a Grundy Co. Genealogical Society to go to
or any named volunteers who will look this up. But I found some vital
stats (death of my grand aunt) in a film rented via the LDS. Might be best
place to start. (Did you know that most towns have a LDS Family History
Center as a room in one of their Stake (aka Churches). If that doesn't
work, and unless someone on this list can help, then the only other way
would be to write the County Clerk's office at Grundy Center and ask them
for specific information -- and include a stamped, self-addressed envelope.
Grundy Center also has a library across the street from the County
Courthouse and they do have film of the newspapers (birth/deaths), but I
don't think they lend them out via inter-library loan(!). However, the Iowa
State Genealogical Society in DesMoines who will rent them out to you. They
have a website too which explains it all. Actually, the State Genealogical
Society is quite helpful and may have volunteers (paid or otherwise) who may
help you. They are super.
Hope this helps some. Good hunting. Sandy McKinder Childs in Calif.
