Janice, have you already located Herfred in the 1920 census? If his parents were Ransom and Elnora, then they are enumerated together in 1920 US Census, Missouri, Texas County, Piney Twp, Town of Houston, Enumeration District 118, Sheet 4A. "Herford C.," age 24, is listed as widowed.

Herfred registered for the draft in Grundy Center, Iowa, on June 5, 1917, and at that time he was still single.

The 1920 census data was "as of" January 1, 1920, so it appears that his second marriage took place sometime after that date. Combined with the WWI draft card information, this narrows down his first marriage to between June 5 1917 and December 1919.
