Subject: Can't read this town name
Date: Mon, 27 Dec 1999 21:02:26 -0800
Hi everyone,
Happy holidays!
I am transcribing some letters my grandmother's cousin wrote to her. Myrtle's
handwriting is very good, but not quite good enough for me to figure out the
name of a town that she mentioned. She also wrote over the first letter which
makes it more difficult.
It was 1954, she lived in Missouri Valley, and she was refering to a place
where cousin Lucille and cousin Ella lived.
the beginning is either "H" or "A"
then there are two letters - m or w or u or v or o
the end of the word is "arden" or possible "orden"
Our best attempt brings up "Huoarden" or maybe "Auvarden"
She says that Ella came to visit (from the mystery town) and "drove down to
the Valley & Co. Bluffs" So presumably this town is "up from the Valley & Co.
Bluffs" - "up" and "down" are often local references.
I think, with your indulgence, I am going to copy part of the letter to the
list (in a separate message). I'm sure you will have valuable comments to add.
