Charles Plato Gorden was born April 8, 1924, the son of Ellet and Stella Datterl Gorden. He died Thursday, October 10, 2002, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of seventy-eight.
Charles was born on the family farm near Dunlap and received his elementary education at the Boyer No. 7 Country School.
On September 25, 1944, Charles was united in marriage to Theda Manchester at the Methodist Parsonage in Dunlap. The couple settled on his family farm with his parents and were blessed with the birth of five children.
Charles farmed with his family and for other area farmers for several years. Later, Charles and Theda moved to Dow City and began driving truck. In 1959, he began working for the Dow City-Anon School as a mechanic and a school bus driver until his retirement in 1987. He also served as a council member for the City of Dow City for two terms and was named Friend of Education for the Dow City School on June 18, 1987.
He was a very loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time with his family. Each day, Charles looked forward to having coffee and playing cards with his friends at Ettleman's in Dow City. He also enjoyed doing mechanic work out of his own garage, chopping wood, mushroom hunting and hunting and fishing in Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Joseph; one brother, Edward; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Warnemuende and Betty Bauer; and two brothers-in-law, Howard Manchester and Harold Daisy.
Charles is survived by his loving wife, Theda; four sons, David and his wife Jody of Omaha, Neb., Rick and his wife Joanne of Dow City, Charlie and his wife Judy of Dow City and Tim and his wife Connie of Ida Grove; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nettie Daisy and Betty Segebart and her husband Roy, both of Lake City; three brothers, George "Bill" and his wife Scenna of Dow City, Frank and his wife Marge and Jess and his wife Jeanie, both of Lake City; one sister-in-law, Leona Gorden of Dow City; other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 14, 2002, at the United Methodist Church in Dow City. Rev. Judy Deweber officiated the services and grave side rites held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Dunlap. Organist Debbie Garrett provided accompaniment for soloist EveVonne Muff as she sang "In the Garden," and Just As I Am, Without One Plea."
Those serving as pallbearers were Steve Kavanaugh, Bernard Smyth, Dan Muff, Ace Ettleman, Tony Heuton and Jim Muff. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Methodist Women at the Dow City Community Building. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
