Query: I am looking for more information on AMANDA NEWBERY who was the bride
of my GGGgrandfather James A. Newbery of Mills and Pottawattamie Co. She was
his fifth wife, and they married sometime around 1873. The marriage was not
long as James died in 1880. - In his probate the writer of the document indicated
a widow, but the item/word "widow" was crossed off. His will was dated July
of 1879 which was almost exactly a year before he died. No mention of a widow
is made. However in 1873 we have found a deed on which Amanda signs away her
dower rights at the time of the sale of a piece of land in Pottawattamie Co. In
a biographical piece about one of his sons it is mentioned that James' last
wife went to Harrison Co. She apparently did so before he died. In his fragile
condition at the age of 88 he lived with his daughter Jolana Winegar in
Wheeler's Grove, Pottawattamie Co. Amanda has been rumored to have been only a
teenager and a Native American girl. We have not been able to find a marriage date
or place for these people so we do not know her maiden name. We only know that
around the turn of the century she was in Harrison Co. I have also found info
about an Amanda Newberry in California in 1930, and it is possibly the same
person based on what we know about her. This also mentions that she was a widow
from Iowa. Can anyone help with this conundrum? We have searched Pottawattamie
Co. and Mills Co. for a marriage date to no avail. James was an RLDS man as
well, but the marriage doesn't show up in the Church record either.
