Col. Paul J. Kovar, U.S. Army (Ret.), 88, longtime Missouri Valley resident and business leader, died Dec. 28, at St. John's Hospital, Maplewood, Minn. He had been making his home at Roseville, Minn. to be near his three daughters.
Paul was born June 18, 1917 in Boyer to John A. and Pearl (MacFarlin) Kovar. He attended St. Patrick's Elementary School and graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1936. Paul enrolled at Creighton University, Omaha, in 1936 and attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, from July 1937 through January of 1938. he then returned to Creighton and received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1941. While at Creighton, Paul was enrolled in the Army ROTC program and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in June of 1940. While attending Creighton Law School, he was called to active duty in November of 1941, and was assigned to the 4th infantry Regiment at Fort Richardson, Alaska. He served in Alaska and in the Aleutian Islands until December of 1943 when his regiment was reassigned to Fort Benning, Ga.
Paul married Imogene Marie Cooper, Jan. 25, 1944. Paul John Kovar, Jr. was born Nov. 13, 1944 at Fort Benning.
In 1945, Paul was reassigned to the 3rd Infantry Regiment and transferred to the European Theater of Operations. He was discharged from the Army in December of 1945 and re-enrolled at Creighton University Law School. He graduated in 1947 and was admitted to practice law in Iowa and Nebraska. Paul's wife, Marie, died Sept. 30, 1946. Paul returned to active military service in the Judge Advocate General Corps of the U.S. Army in January of 1948. While stationed at the Presidio of San Francisco, he married Donna Dee Schmidt of Kansas City, Mo., May 28, 1949. During their time at the Presidio, Katherine Kovar was born Jan. 16, 1951. Carol Ann Kovar was born Sept. 9, 1952 at Fort Leavenworth. Kan. Paul was joined by his family in June of 1952 until July of 1955, when he was given an assignment on Okinawa. The family was stationed in Charlottesville, Va., where Paul taught at the Judge Advocate General School. During that time, Dorothy Kovar was born, March 19, 1959. In June o!
f 1959, Paul was transferred to Washington, D.C., where he served in the Office of the Judge Advocate General in the Pentagon. During this time, he was sworn in as an officer of the Supreme Court of the United States. In 1963, Paul was transferred to Germany, where the family spent two years in Heidelberg and two years in Munich. In September of 1967, he retired from the U.S. Army and moved to Missouri Valley.
Paul worked for Peoples State Bank, serving as vice president and trust officer. In February of 1983, at the time of his father's death, Paul became president of Peoples State Bank and served until 1987. He managed the Kovar Insurance Agency until it was sold in 1991. After his retirement, he and Donna bred and showed English Cocker Spaniels and Petit Basset Griffon Vendeens. After Donna's death in September of 2002, Paul moved to Roseville, Minn. to be closer to his three daughters. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, and his wives, Marie and Donna.
Survivors include: son, Paul John Jr., and his wife, Victoria, Milwaukee, Wis.; daughters, Katherine Kovar, Minneapolis, Minn., Carol Kovar Jacobs and her husband, John Gilbert, Shoreview, Minn., Dorothy Kovar and her husband, Valdis Inde, Edina, Minn.; grandchildren, Jennifer Jacobs, Ron Kovar, Zintis Inde, Aldis Inde; and great-grandchildren, Jordan and Aiden Kovar. A Funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 7 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Missouri Valley, Rev. Fr. Bob Harris, celebrant. Organist was Mary Stessman, vocalist was Elizabeth Dillinger. Casket bearers were: Ben Tierney, Alan Anderson, Jim Schwertley, Mark Tierney, John Murphy, and Charles Wolford. Interment was in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Missouri Valley, with military honors conducted by Julius F. Muller Post No. 337, American Legion. Hennessey-Aman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
