Evelyn M. Peterson, age 90, passed away Sunday, December 24, 2006, at her home in Logan, Iowa.

Evelyn was born February 7, 1916, to Frederick Peter and Bertha Myrna (Schroeder) Hughes in Harrison County, Iowa.

Evelyn graduated from Missouri Valley High School and taught elementary school in Magnolia and Logan for 32 years.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard Peterson; son, Sheldon Peterson; great grandson, Jacob Leonard; brother, Philip Hughes. She is survived by daughter, Sharon and Skip Leonard of Logan; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Peterson of Omaha, Neb.; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; sister, Elsie Caldwell of Anacortes, Wash.; 2 brothers, Harry Hughes of Lewis, Iowa, and Duane Hughes of Bedford, Iowa.

Visitation with the family will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, at the Christian Church in Logan.

Evelyn Marianne (Hughes) Peterson was born February 7, 1916, to Frederick and Bertha (Schroeder) Hughes in Harrison County, Iowa. Evelyn graduated from Missouri Valley High School. She received normal training her senior year of high school, and she started teaching in a country school. She then took a teaching position at the Magnolia Elementary School and then at the Lo-Ma School. Evelyn completed her teaching degree at Dana College and she taught school for 32 years. Evelyn married Bernard Peterson on May 20, 1942, in Papillion, Nebraska. The couple lived near Portsmouth and later moved to Magnolia before settling east of Logan. The couple moved to Logan in 1954.
Evelyn was baptized in the Lutheran Church, but she attended and supported the Christian Church in Logan. Evelyn was in a pitch club and a pinochle club. She was also active in the Senior Citizens. Evelyn enjoyed quilting, needlework, reading and cross word puzzles. She also enjoyed flowers and birds, and watching skating, baseball, and football on television.
Evelyn died on Sunday, December 24, 2006, at her home in Logan at the age of 90 years, 10 months, and 17 days.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bernard; son, Sheldon Harry Peterson; great grandson, Jacob Leonard; and brother, Philip Hughes. She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Skip) Leonard of Logan, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Cheryl Peterson of Omaha, Nebraska; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; sister, Elsie Caldwell of Anacortes, Washington; two brothers, Harry Hughes of Lewis, Iowa, Duane Hughes of Bedford, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
