Carol,
That is the first I've heard of the 'Iowa Hospital for the Insane' burning
down! The picture in the 1888 Portrait and Album of Henry County Iowa has
an engraved drawing of it. When I visited Mt. Pleasant the summer before
last it was still there - at least I'm certain the main part is still there.
Of course it is now called MT. PLEASANT CORRECTIONAL FACILITY and has a web
page at
http://www.state.ia.us/government/doc/Facility5.html
My gggrandfather John Winters owned the kiln and quarry where the brick and
stone for the hospital came from. Is there an account of the hospital
burning down?

Regards,
Patrick Winters
