From the HISTORY OF HENRY COUNTY IOWA, published 1879
f627.h5 on page 620, I found the following:
J.L. Ross,(John LeRoy Ross) (Edwin’s father, R.A.’s grandfather, Mary
Catherine Bartles’ husband, Oliver Ross’ & Sophia Wright’s 2nd son)

1855. He came to Henry County (Mt. Pleasant) in 1868. He married Mary
(Catherine) Bartles in 1857 who was born in Wyoming County, NY in 1835.
Edward A. Ross born in 1859 (although the book says 1869), Wilber born in
1868, and Clara born in 1864. Clara died in 1867.
From the City Directory in Mt. Pleasant, Genealogy Library:
CHICAGO LUMBER YARD of B.F. (Benjamin Franklin) Ross
This yard was started in 1870 by B.F. and J.L. (John LeRoy) Ross, the firm
then being known as ROSS BROTHERS. In 1877, the month of December, the
senior partner became owner of the CHICAGO LUMBER YARD. The brothers,
however jointly own the yard recently purchased by them. The same being
located near the railroad.
