I also would like to know the answer to this question. I have an g g uncle
that was admitted several times into the Iowa State Hospital for the Insane
at Mount Pleasant between the years of 1880 and 1920. I have never really
found the reason why, except during that time, all sorts of aliments were
considered "insane" including alcoholism.
