Hi Kelly: I just recently posted a whole series of articles regarding 'The
Negro In Iowa' -- to the Decatur and Lucas County, Iowa Lists. There are 27
segments to this series and I would be most happy to post them to the Henry
County, Iowa List (with permission from the List Owner).. Mt. Pleasant was
indeed one of the areas that accepted the Negro early on. Henry County had
one of the largest Negro populations in Iowa from l870-1940.

I grew up in Mt. Pleasant, went to Mt. Pleasant High School (born in l944)
and we had many Negro friends that we went to school with. Most of them
lived in an area called 'Lee Town' (and I don't have any idea why that
was -- it was just something that was...) Some of their names were Bennett,
Greenup, Lee; I do remember
the name Hawkins, but don't remember who that might have been..

Again, I would love to post this entire series of 'The Negro In Iowa' -- as
it is wonderful history. I can also send it to you personally. My Best
Regards, Nancee
(McMurtrey)Seifert;
