> How public are Iowa records?
> Starting Sunday the Courier, in conjunction with 12 other Iowa newspapers,
will bring you an in-depth series about Iowa's open-records law, government
agencies and accessibility to public information. Articles from Sunday's
newspaper will be posted online Monday morning by 11 a.m.. Click on the
links below to find out more information about Iowa's open-records law.

> SUNDAY: Local government officials in Iowa, especially those in law
enforcement, routinely deny citizens access to information about their
government, an investigation conducted by the state's newspapers found. The
first-of-its-kind audit in Iowa found that government workers often were
ignorant of the requirements of the state's open-records law.
> MONDAY: Public records held by law enforcement agencies were those least
likely to be available for inspection. Most of Iowa's public school
districts either ignored a request for copies of two records or said the
copies must be picked up in person, rather than being mailed to a citizen.
> TUESDAY: Government employees expect the public to abide by the multitude
of laws on the books. But the government employees have little to fear if
they do not adhere to the requirements of Iowa's public-records law because
the attorney general and local prosecutors rarely take action against
violators.
