Subject : John W. & Catharine Conner of Jasper Co., IA

Dear Aaron,

Just saw your posting on Jasper County's list. I am delighted to find
someone else interested in this line!

John W. and Catharine Conner are my gggg grandparents. Their oldest child
(as far as I know now she was the oldest), Sarah Jane Conner married Abyram
Leonard. Either on the way from Ohio or just after they arrived, Sarah Jane
died. She had given birth to her only child (named Sarah Jane Leonard after
the mother) just 2 1/2 weeks earlier. This child (my gg grandmother) was
raised by John W. and Catharine Conner. I have long wanted to find out more
on them.

Just recently, I began corresponding with someone also related to this line,
and we are in the process of filling in the blanks for each other. I would
love to do the same with you.

I do know that John is their son as he is listed with the family in the 1850
census. However, he is NOT listed with them in the 1860 census. Here's the
census info:

1850 Federal Census - Delaware Co., OH
(Page 299a, lines 41 & 42, and pgae 299b, lines 1-8):
Conner, John, age 42, born in VA
Conner, Catharine, age 40, born in VA
Conner, Sarah, age 18, born in VA
Conner, Mary E., age 16, born in VA
Conner, Rebecca, age 14, born in VA
Conner, Rachel, age 11, born in VA
Conner, Ellen, age 8, born in VA
Conner, Elizabeth, age 6, born in VA
Conner, Harriet, age 4, born in OH
Conner, John D., age 2, born in OH

1860 census - Clear Creek township, Jasper County, IA
(pg. 99, lines 12-17):
John W. Conner; 32* yr. old male, born in VA
Catherine Conner; 30** year old female, born in VA; cannot read or write
Elizabeth Conner; 16 yr. old female; born in OH
Harriet Conner; 13 yr. old female; born in OH
S. J. Leonard; 3 yr. old female; born in Iowa
Erlene J. H__mm; 8 yr. old female; born in IA
None of the children attended school.
*His tombstone gives a birthdate of 1808, so he would have been 52 yrs. old,
not 32. This must have been a transcription error.
** Her tombstone gives a birthdate of 1809, so he would have been 50 yrs.
old, not 30. This must have been a transcription error.

Both my parents grew up in Jasper County, Iowa, so I have been to the
cemeteries there a lot. John and Catharine Conner are buried at Ashton
Cemetery which is a bit north and east of Graham Cemetery. I've been to
both of those cemeteries numerous times. I will have to look at John
COnner's gravestone the next time I am there.

I did check the cemetery records and this is what the stones at Graham say:

John Conner
Father
28 Aug. 1846 - 28 Dec. 1918

Next to him is:
Ellen C. (Lint) Conner
Mother
20 Aug 1850 - 12 Feb 1937

I have a lot of info on the Lint family as they are tied in to other lines I
am related to. As for this John Conner, he may be the son of John W. &
Catharine Conner, but the birthdate on his tombstone and the age given in
the 1850 census are just a bit off. I will contact a genealogist I know who
lives in Jaspoer COunty to see if she can scrounge up an obituary for him.
That will hopefully list the names of his parents and surviving relatives,
as well as info on his wife and children.

How are you related to this line?

Sincerely,
Shelley Arri
