Speaking of this particular topic, has anybody done any research on
migration routes from NY -> IA around this time (1855-60)? Some of my
ancestors came from the NYC/NJ area to Iowa first, then ended up moving on
down to Tazewell Co. IL where they settled. But not before having at least
one of their children in IA. I wonder if there was some sort of media push
for families to move to IA in the local NY area at that time.

Just curious...

I did a little google research on railroads, 1855 and it doesn't look like
there were any in IA then.
However, it looks like there was continous track between NY and Chicago and
possibly the Mississippi River. I remember once reading where it took a
week to get from Omaha to the Pacific Oceean after the transcontinental rr
was built and the distance from NY to Chicago is less. My guesss is that
distance was covered in less than a week.
The difficult part of the journey would have been from Chicago or end of
track west to Keokuk County in the spring time although I'm guessing steam
boats would have probably come up to Ottumwa.
