I do think most of the inhabitants of Coal Creek were Quaker, but I seem to
remember being told there was a Methodist church there for a while, too.

Here are scans of a couple of old maps:

I think Coal Creek's population at its peak was measured in dozens rather
than hundreds.

Hello,

I was trying to figure out more about Coal Creek, Ia.
I was told by someone that it was a Quaker town.

Amasa and Judith Ferrall Fisher, son of Quakers Joseph
Fisher and Hannah Pidgeon, son of Quakers Joseph
Fisher and Anne Carey , son of Quakers John Fisher and
Elizabeth Scarborough of Bucks Co., Pa, came to
Pleasant Grove Twp., Mahaska Co., Iowa, near
Indianapolis in 1852. Judith descended from Quakers
William Ferrall and Martha Cox, but was no longer a
member at the time of their marriage. They are my
gg-grandparents.

Amasa was a physician and a minister with the
Disciples of Christ church of Indianapolis until his
death in 1878.

His son Marcus Fisher's oldest daughter Lucy's obit
mentioned she was born in Coal Creek and a cousin and
I were trying to figure out why. They were living at
the farm near Indianapolis at the time of her birth.

Your reply that it was never incorporated is
interesting. I didn't see the town listed in The
History of Keokuk County, Iowa 2001 compiled by the
Keo-Mah Genealogical Society, Inc.

Does anyone know the size(population) of the community
during the twenty year period of its existence and
anything about this Quaker community?
