Loren J. Sheldon:
Loren J. Sheldon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Elwood Sheldon, was born on
the banks of the Ohio River near Vevay, Indiana, March 15, 1885. When he was
a year old the family moved to Jefferson County, Indiana, near Bellview,
where he lived until he was 18 years of age. At that time, he went to
Illinois to work on a farm near Bloomington. After working for the man two
years, he rented the 400 acre farm.
On March 5, 1907, he was united in marriage to Miss Lillian Phillips of
Madison, Indiana. To this union one son was born, Alton Elwood Sheldon.
After farming for two years the husband and wife felt the call of the
living God to give their lives to the ministry of the church. They sold
their property and went to Taylor University, Upland, Indiana, where the
husband and wife studied together. When the husband graduated he was united
with the North Indiana Conference and his first appointment was at the
Highland Avenue Methodist Churc, Marion, Indiana. After spending six years
in the Black Hills in Rapid City and Deadwood, (SD) he then asked that his
Conference membership be transferred to the Upper Iowa Conference, now the
North Iowa. He was pastor for two years in Iowa and then was appointed as
Field Representative for Allegheny College, then to Ohio Wesleyan, the
college that was very dear to his heart. After being stricken with a heart
attack he was compelled to retire, but when his health would permit, he
worked for a number of different Methodist Colleges including Athens College
in Alabama, Nebraska Wesleyan, Simpson College, Indianola, Iowa, and West
Virginia Wesleyan. He closed his work at Cornell College after he was
stricken with the cancer that ended his life March 30, 1954.
He leaves to mourn his departure his beloved wife who worked with him so
faithfully in the work of the Kingdom of God and the Church, his son Alton
Elwood, eight grandchildren, one sister, Margaret Sheldon, a number of other
relatives, and a large number of friends.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 2, 1954, in charge of Dr.
Earle E. Baker, Cedar Falls, and his pastor, the Reverend William E. Pruett,
Madison, Indiana. Burial was in Graham, near Madison.
