We have a subscription at Ancestry.com, it's indexed and available
thru one of their databases. Also, I did a google search and see
that the index is available online with Rootsweb at this link:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~iabiog/linn/hl1878/hl1878.htm

Here's what it says on Ancestry.com about it:
Linn County, Iowa, History to 1878
Description:
Linn County is located in eastern Iowa. It was formed in 1837 from
Dubuque and Jackson counties. This database is an early history of
the county. Many biographical sketches are included, which detail
prominent individuals in the community. Researchers will also find
statistical details, history of the Northwest, and other
miscellaneous matters. This database will be useful to those
researching early Iowa settlers.
