The 1880 census for O'Brien County is finished (except for extensive
proof-reading). The summary extract on the O'Brien site has been updated
to include Sheldon and Floyd Twp. How many people were in O'Brien County
in 1880? --the 1979 history says 4155. My count is about 4166. There were
no census listings for Dale, Omega, and Union Townships. Dale Twp wasn't
organized until June 8, 1880- probably too late to be recognized in the
census. I can't find any history for Omega or Union but the towns
located in those areas were not organized until after 1880. It surprised
me how the population was not uniformly distributed in 1880. It was
grouped along the railroad construction route, Sheldon, Sanborn, Hartley.
Approximate population distribution was: Sheldon-740, Highland/Liberty
twp-730, Floyd Twp-370, Grant Twp-365, Sanborn-360, Center Twp-350,
Carroll Twp- 320, Baker Twp-200, Caledonia Twp-175, Waterman Twp-165,
Primghar-140, Hartley-120, Franklin Twp-85, Lincoln Twp-20, and Summit
Twp-15. Don't add them because I rounded.
If you have any corrections, improvements to suggest on the census
listing, or anything else, let me know.

My wife and I will start our summer travels soon so I will be checking
email on the road. I will be back in O'Brien County for a few days next
week to attend to some family affairs. We will attend the NGS convention
in Richmond, VA on May 12-14 and then on up to WV and PA. I have changed
my email address to
this is a forwarding service as I will have to change my internet
provider when we get to PA.
I still don't have a valid email address for Joan Lajoie. If anyone knows
her and can provide her correct email address, let me know.

A new query came in recently and is included below.
