Mona,
Many thanks for these tips. I've been using MapQuest to get an idea of where
the Pigeon Creek runs. Another contact I had couldn't find the "Big" part of
the river either. We did not know about the information you have included
regarding the Mormon settlements. I'll have a look again at the USGen
website. If you got this info from another site, please let me know as the
internet is my best avenue for information so far.
I'll see about getting the book you've mentioned. We do have access to a
Family History Library (LDS) perhaps it's on microfilm. If not - I'm at a
loss again as the Canadian FHC's cannot borrow books from across the
USA/Can. border. Ancestry.com had an Iowa state census list for 1852
showing Joseph Depew & Wealthy Elmer with the two boys in Pottawattamie, so
we figure they may have died there, as they did not travel west on the
wagons with the two boys. We knew about there stay in Lee County in 1850. So
we are still stuck on the whereabouts of Joseph & Wealthy.
Your time is/was greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

The Big Pigeon creek runs in the northwestern part of Pottawattamie County,
Iowa, past Crescent, Honey Creek, etc. I have a map of Mormon Settlements
in this area, and it shows the Big Pigeon settlement north of Council Bluffs
between Crescent, Iowa and Honey Creek. This would be on present day Lincoln
Highway or Old Highway 30 north out of Council Bluffs traveling towards
Missouri Valley, if you have a road atlas. The Big Pigeon Creek branches
off west and flows to the Missouri River. The Little Pigeon continues south
toward Council Bluffs. (Probably more than you wanted to know, but...)
The LDS Congregation on Pigeon Creek was known as the North Pigeon group and
a list of some early members can be found at the USGenWeb site for Pott. Co.
http://iagenweb.org/pottawattamie/
Wealthy D. Earl is mentioned in the book "Treasures of Pioneer History"
about early Mormon settlements, but I'm not sure where you can get a copy of
that book. Perhaps you can order it from the LDS Library.
Many members of the Depew family went to Utah. I also see in census records
that ELMER is spelled ELMORE.
Wealthy (Elmer) Depew may have died in Big Pigeon camp in Pott. Co., Iowa,
but in 1850 she and her husband were living in Lee County, Iowa, according
to that census:
October 1850, Lee County, Iowa, District 29.
Dwelling 1191, Family 1197.
Joseph Dupue (transcribed as Dupere in the index), farmer, age 50, b. PA
Wealthy Dupue, 40, b. VT, wife
Charles Elmore, 20, laborer, b. VT
Louis, 17, b. VT
Austin, 14, b. VT
Martha J., 12, b. VT
William, 6, b. IA
John, 3, b. IA
Living on the next farm is a man that appears to be a brother to Wealthy
Elmer:
Hiram Elmore, 34, b. VT, farmer
Polly Elmore, 22, b. OH, wife
Henry Elmore, 9, b. IA
Louisa Elmore, 7, b. IA
Franklin Elmore, 2, b. IA
Cynthia Elmore, 5 months, b. IA
I don't find any burial record for Wealthy Elmer Depew.
I hope this is helpful.
