I will be traveling in the Midwest during the next couple weeks and am
planning on making a stop in Davenport for researching. I would like to
know what the best places for research in the city might be.
One of the families I am researching immigrated from Ireland in the 1840's.
The father got his citizenship in 1856 and I would like to get copies of
any papers that might be available regarding this process. This family was
Catholic so I would like to see if there are any records through the
Church. Several of the men were involved in riverboats and that is another
thing I would like to get more information about.
I have a plat of the "Mullen Estate" showing that several people were
living next to the Oakdale Cemetery. I also received a copy of several
pages of a book involving the growth of the city of Davenport which mention
that John MULLEN, my ggg-grandfather, bought 80 acres of land in 1846 and
sold 40 acres in 1856 to create the cemetery. Some of my ancestors are
buried in this cemetery so I would like to see if I can find them.
Another cemetery that quite a few ancestors were buried in is, I believe,
now called Sacred Heart, and I would like to visit there as well.
I am also interested in looking through the newspapers of the times
(1840-1925), if available. Are there copies available at the public
library or would I need to go to another location?
Any other ideas or suggestions would be welcome. This will be my first
time in Davenport, so I have no idea of what is available.
Nancy
