I'm a high school teacher, and I found this article too good to not share:

The Daily Union - Rock Island, IL
March 23, 1879

Miss Blaisdell found that the biggest boy in her North Adams school was
unruly, and made up her mind to settle the question of supremacy definitely.
She led him into and anteroom, closed the door, and undertook to whip him.
There was a rough-and-tumble fight, in which the combatants pounded each
other, rolled over and over on the floor, and tore their clothes. At length
the boy was thrown flat on his back, and the mistress knelt on his breast to
hold him down. He was conquered; but in an hour afterward he was taken
violently ill, and his recovery is doubtful.
