I have a partial copy of an obituary for Asaph SERGEANT from an unknown and undated newspaper, but which was probably dated Monday Jan 3, 1927 due to other information on the page. It is rather lengthy, so I will just extract here the information that I would deem to be important to the genealogist:
Asaph SERGEANT of near LeClaire, resided 54 years in Scott County, 50 years a Mason, 70 years an Oddfellows. Death occured at 5:40 a.m. "this morning" at St. Luke's Hospital. He was in the 95th year of his age. For many years resided on a farm on the River Road a short distance west of LeClaire. Born Crawford County, VA April 1, 1832, parents Charles and Polly WOODARD SERGEANT. The 5th son of a family of 14 children consisting of 8 sons and 6 daughters, now all deceased.
At age 21 he arrived at Waterloo, IA; in 1854 he laid out and named the town of Hudson, Iowa. In 1860 went to Fairplay, Colorado (for gold mining). While crossing mountians in a severe snowstorm he lost his way, and due to a broken snowshoe he had to bury himself under the snow and leaves for a period of two days and one night. Feet badly frozen, no medical aid available; fellow workers advised amputation of his feet but he refused but did consent to removal of toes on both feet.
In the early 70s he returned to Iowa and married Mary CONDIT on Nov 19, 1873 at LeClair. Mary daughter of Sylvester and Phoebe WOLF CONDIT, early settlers of Scott County. The wedding ring was made from gold mined by Mr. Sergeant while in Colorado.
Resided on the Condit homestead which had been purchased directly from the government in 1833 by Sylvester Condit, where Mary had been born and spent her entire life. She died Jan 28, 1823 (probably should read 1923) at the age of 83 years.
Affiliated with Pilot lodge (?), 50 years member of Snow Lodge No. 4, F. & A.M. of LeClaire, 32nd degree member of the Scottish R(? cut off) Bodies of Davenport.
Survivors: Dau Mrs. Harry D. PARMETE (?), RFD 1 Davenport; son Sylvester Asaph SERGEANT; one granddaughter and 5 grandsons of Davenport.
Funeral services to be held at the family home on Wednesday afternoon. Interment in family lot in Glendale cem (cut off).
