Funeral Wednesday for Judge MERCER

Services for Judge Frederick O. MERCER of U. S. District Court, presiding judge of the U. S. District Court in Rock Island, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Presbyterian Church, Canton, Ill. Burial will be in Vermont, Ill. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Gerard Funeral Home, Canton. Judge Mercer, 65, died late Sunday in Graham Hospital, Canton, after an extended illness. He had served on the Rock Island bench since the Federal Building was opened in 1959. He divided his time between federal courts in Rock Island and Peoria. After working two years at Canton as an assistant state's attorney of Fulton Counlty, he was elected Fulton County judge. His election to the post at age 25 in 1926 made him the youngest county judge ever elected in the state. Judge Mercer served as a county judge eight years, then entered private law practice. He was appointed to the federal court in 1956 by then President Dwight Eisenhower. Born in Vermont, Ill.,!
Judge Mercer received a law degree from the University of Illinois in 1924. Survivors include his wife, Melba; a daugher, Charlotte VAN SYCKLE, Canton; a son,Frederick O Jr., Canton, and brothers, C. C., Vermont, and Ralph D., Bozeman, Mont.
