Subject: St. Mary's Cemetery, Davenport, Scott, Iowa- Obits
Date: Fri, 28 Jan 2005 16:59:11 -0600
First of a series of Obits for person buried originally at St. Mary's,
Davenport, Iowa. A lot of the burials were removed to Holy Family Cemetery;
however, some stones were broken and some unidentified. I think I even remember
reading about the stones ending up in someone's yard, or basement or somewhere
like that a while back. I attended St. Mary's parochial school for grades 3-8
and remember the playground was next to the cemetery, which was not very well
kept. The boys would go in there and find snakes with which to chase the girls.
A lot of the burials appear to be of Irish descent--that's probably
understandable. St. Mary's was early on known as the Irish church while just a
couple blocks down the street from there, St. Joseph's was known as the German
church. St. Joseph's didn't have a cemetery and I know my husband's gg
grandfather, Ulrich Westendorf, was a parishioner of St. Joe's but was buried
in St. Mary's cemetery, 1893.
