Thank you for both of your responses. First, I had exhausted the 1850 census research. (NY, PA, OH, IN and IA). Except for the Scott County 1870 Census, no noteworthy results. I already had Samuel's obit from Ringgold County, but thank you for your effort. The obit does not tell me anything about his parents, but does allude to his having been elsewhere in Iowa prior to his settling in Ringgold County after the Civil War. (About 1868.) I have a typed copy of a letter that Samuel wrote his father during the Civil War which portrays that he had been living elsewhere in Iowa (location unknown). My hope was that Samuel and his parents had moved from New York to Iowa, direct, without prolonged stops in other states as so many others had done.
