Surname: Steel, Steele
-------------------------
My Steeles went to Iowa sometime after 1848, from Indiana. parents were
James Wiliiam Steele and Jane Campbell Wilson, with children born in Kentucky
between 1827-1835, and more children born between 1837-1848. Names were
Eliza Jane, Hugh Nathaniel, Susannah Catherine, Mary Anne, Samuel M., Martha
Jane, Sarah Emily, Joseph William (my grandfather), James Thomas, Nancy
Elizabeth and John Franklin. Three did not reach adulthood (Eliza Jane,
Samuel M. and Nancy Elizabeth). They were in Van Buren County until 1864
when they went West, becoming early settlers just south of Seattle, which
itself had only been settled 13 years before by the Denny Party of Illinois.
Martha Jane wrote poetry and practiced her handwriting in a journal, which
contains dates between the years 1855-1864. I have lots to share and would
like to learn more from anyone else, who has knowledge of this family.
I would especially like to know the birthplace of Hugh Steel, father of
James William Steele (the father of all these children). Hugh married Catherine
Dunn in Bourbon County KY in 1796. He and Catherine are buried in Madison,
Jefferson, Indiana, where his gravestone says he was born in 1770. I would
also like to learn more about the Dunn family. Any tidbit gratefully accepted!
