Subject: Burial information and Census index and rsearch questions
Date: Wed, 5 May 2004 16:31:37 EDT
I just found information today at the State Historical Society in Iowa City,
that William H. Turner, husband of Anna E. (nee Lamb) Turner died in Ottumwa
on March 20, 1895 (it was a little unclear as to whether it was a 5 or a 3, but
several pages earlier on the death records was 1895, so I'm assuming that is
it) and was buried in the Ottumwa Cemetery two days later on the 22nd.
Can anyone on the list tell me whether there are any sextant's records for
the Ottumwa Cemetery which would tell us where in the cemetery he is buried?
AND...how large is the cemetery....I assume too large to walk it?
I know that William Turner's wife was still alive in 1920 at age 78, but the
death register at the historical library did not go that far. Are there death
record indexes in Wapello Co (at the courthouse? or?) which I can access to
determine when she died.
In addition, I found an index for the 1925 Wapello Co State Census, but it
does not include Ottumwa. Has Ottumwa been indexed for that 1925 census and if
so, where is the index available?
For that matter...how about Ottumwa for the 1885, 1895, 1905 and 1915 state
censuses....have they been indexed yet?
I am planning a trip down to Ottumwa within the next 30-60 days and would
like some info on where I should go for research in the area. I will want to
check for probate records, cemetery info and locations (for pictures of stones if
still there), and other death records as well as some marriage records. If
there is a genealogy library, where is it located and what are the hours of
operation?
Thanks for any help.
