Barbara Ann Otteson
POCATELLO - Barbara Ann Otteson, Oct. 15, 1931 to May 24, 2003, mortal life came peacefully to a close for Barbara, who passed away at her home in Pocatello of natural causes.
Barbara was born October 15, 1931, in Montpelier, Idaho. She was the second daughter of seven children born to George Sydney and Edith Bills Kunz.
Her parents taught her the value of hard work, something she perfected during her sojourn in this earthly sphere. Barbara never shunned the responsibilities given her. She possessed, as her father George would say "plenty of fire and vinegar!"
Barbara grew up in Montpelier, Idaho Falls, and Bern, Idaho. She graduated from Montpelier High School in 1949. She worked in Montpelier for Dr. Spencer Hess as a dental assistant for several years. She work in Pocatello for Dr. Eugene H. Wray as an oral surgical assistant for over 21 years. She worked as a manager of Mr. Soapy's Car Wash and Convenience Mart in Pocatello.
Before her retirement, she was employed at Bagelby's as a prep cook. Her work ethic was reflected in her loyalty and commitment to the responsibilities with which she was entrusted. She took great pride in her work performance and gave any task her very best effort.
On September 18, 1950, Barbara married Wilbur Don Watson. The had one daughter, Ann Louise. They were later divorced. On June 7, 1958, she married Don Charles Otteson. They had one son, Mark Don. Both Wilbur and Don preceded her in death. On May 18, 1996, Barbara was sealed to Don by proxy in the Idaho Falls temple.
She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was an expert at making homemade chocolates. She enjoyed playing cards, loved watching the Utah Jazz play basketball on the television and putting puzzles together. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Barbara was featured as a gift wrapping instructor by Hallmark stores. Her Christmas wrapped packages were extraordinary! It was not uncommon for her to fill requests of family members and friends who brought their packages for her to wrap.
Barbara enjoyed singing and was a member of the Pocatello Chapter of Sweet Adelines, where she sang lead. When she had an opportunity to sit down and play a piano, one could count on hearing the tune of "Sentimental Journey" played with great exuberance! When it came to music, her greatest joy was listening to her son, Mark, play his guitar and sing.
She is survived a daughter, Ann (Phill) Williams, Alpine, Utah; her son, Mark (Lori) Otteson, Pocatello; grandchildren, Rachael Ann Williams, Haylee Jo and Markki Dawn Otteson; siblings, Betty Jo Hyman, North Hills, Calif., Gary George (Kathy) Kunz, Salt Lake City, Utah, Ronald Kent (Barbie) Kunz, Orem, Utah, Roger Lee (Judy) Kunz, Pocatello. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Douglas Ray Kunz, who died as an infant.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2003, at the Pocatello LDS Third Ward, 225 Oakwood Drive, with Bishop Ralph Baker officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. Fourth Ave., Pocatello, and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
