LOS GATOS, Calif. - John Raymond Wilkes, a resident of Pocatello during the 1960s and 1970s, passed away in Los Gatos, Calif. on July 28, 2003, where he has lived near his daughter Rae Ann and family for the past five years.
Close to the end of his ninety-first year when he passed away, John was born on August 29, 1912 in Afton, Wyoming to Noen and Mary Wilkes. He had two sisters, Rhena (Nield) and Ruth (Dunn), both deceased.
John spent his early life with his family in a small cabin half way between Afton and Montpelier, Idaho. During the autumn of 1912 John's father and his family homesteaded this mid-point area and built the Halfway House (and barn to accommodate thirty-two teams of horses) as an enterprise to care for freighters passing through. At the Half Way House the family lived a pioneer lifestyle for the first thirteen years of John's life.
John's family moved to Montpelier in 1925 when the state highway was built between Montpelier and Afton, making the services at the Half Way House no longer needed. John attended Montpelier schools. On Sept. 6, 1933, he married Lucile Tueller, also from Montpelier, in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. The couple had three children: Rae Ann (Merrill) of San Jose, Calif.; Linda (Harris); and Richard John (Rick) of Lebanon, Ohio. Both Lucile and Linda preceded John in death, Lucile in 1974 and Linda in 1983.
John was a Union Pacific Railroad engineer for thirty years, working out of Montpelier and Pocatello. He spent his later years in Mesa, Ariz. and Elmore, Minn. with his second wife, Bertha Jones, who passed away in 1998. An avid gardener, John also enjoyed camping, fishing and woodworking. He and Lucile were blessed with three children, 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, August 4, 2003 at the Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Pocatello. Family memorial services will be held on August 8 on Anderson Island, located in South Puget Sound, Washington. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Manning-Wheatley Funeral Chapel, 510 N. 12th Ave.
