POCATELLO - With loved ones close by, longtime Pocatello resident Dorothy A. Gallafent Scott passed away in her home on Jan. 4, 2005, after battling cancer with amazing grace, humor and dignity. Born July 1, 1923, in Randolph, Utah, to Alma Monroe Argyle and Emma Ireta Argyle, Dorothy was the seventh of 12 children. Dorothy exhibited throughout her life the optimism, tenacity, strength and values characteristic of her pioneer ancestors. Growing up with 10 brothers and one sister on a cattle and sheep ranch, she developed a strong work ethic and appreciation of life.
Dorothy attended Rich County High School and enjoyed participating in band, cheer and 4-H. After graduation, she worked for the Selective Service System in Ogden, Utah, then attended the University of Idaho Southern Branch in Pocatello.
On Feb. 14, 1944, she married Robert Dave Gallafent ("Bob").
Bob owned and operated Bannock Motor, a Pontiac-Cadillac-GMC dealership. Dorothy provided great support to him and his business, and together they served the community in many capacities. Bob and Dorothy had three children.
After Bob died in 1955, Dorothy became a successful businesswoman in her own right. She was the first in Pocatello to own and operate a health and fitness facility, the Metropolitan Health Spa. Other commercial enterprises included a Travel Lodge Motel and Main Street Plaza.
Dorothy continued to serve the community through her involvement with Soroptimists, an international service organization for businesswomen. In 1981-82, she served as Pocatello Soroptimist president and attended the International Conference in Istanbul, Turkey, as a delegate.
Dorothy married Edward L. Scott in November 1958, and they had one child. Dorothy and Ed divorced in 1998.
Dorothy had a variety of interests. She was a lifelong member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was an accomplished seamstress, enjoyed refinishing furniture and was an avid reader. Dorothy was comfortable with people, regardless of their station in life, and was especially kind to those in need. Her greatest delight, though, was being in the service and company of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Dorothy is survived by her four children, Dave R. (Suzanne) Gallafent of Pocatello, Lynne Gallafent (Peter) White of Mesa, Ariz., Steven R. (Dawn) Gallafent of Pocatello, and Susan Scott (Paul) Katsilometes of Pocatello; by 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grand children; two brothers, Ralph Argyle of Randolph, Utah, and Cyril Argyle of Provo, Utah; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at 1 p.m., in the LDS Valleyview Ward building, 1433 Gwen Drive. Prior to the services a visitation of family and friends will be held at the church from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Colonial Funeral Home, 2005 S. Fourth Ave., Pocatello.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made in Dorothy's name to the American Cancer Society.
