MONTPELIER - James E. "Doc" Costello, 78, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2005, at the University of Utah Medical Center of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Jim was born Jan. 15, 1927, in Peoria, Ill., to Edward and Helen Fuller Costello. He spent his childhood on his grandmother's ranch in Carpenter, Wyo.

Jim graduated from high school in Seattle, Wash. After high school he enlisted in the Army and served in the Pacific Theatre in WWII. Upon discharge from the service, he went to work for the U.P. Railroad. Following that. he attended Colorado State University, earning his undergraduate and his 1955 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degrees.

In 1956 he opened his vet practice in Montpelier, Idaho. At that time and for many years after he was the only vet from Jackson Hole to Bridger Valley. Many remember Jim traveling in his vet truck. He would hold small animal clinics in court houses, beauty salons and taverns in Kemmerer, Evanston and Lyman. He would spay and neuter cats and dogs on his ironing board operating table. Large animal work made up the majority of his practice. Many ranchers housed him overnight while he traveled from ranch to ranch. Calving season brought many late night calls. His daughters, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and neighborhood friends remember many good times accompanying him on his vet calls.

Jim was a hard worker and joker. He and his family have a farm in Montpelier where they have many fond memories. He enjoyed playing practical jokes on friends and family. He always had a good joke to tell. He loved reciting, "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" and "The Cremation of Sam McGee". He was an avid reader and liked to argue politics.

Jim is survived by his wife Jina, his daughters. Jeanie (Stan) and Tippy (Kyle), and four grandchildren, Emily, Blake, Maria, and Royce, and many nieces and nephews and one special niece, Big Jeanie.

Funeral mass will be officiated by Fr. Carlos Felipe Velez on Wednesday, June 1, at 11 a.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The rosary will be said on Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. at Matthews Mortuary after which friends may visit with family from 7 until 9 p.m. The interment will take place in the Olivet Cemetery in Cheyenne, Wyo.
